I began my career as a full time artist in 1991, specialising in painting with oils. 1995 was the year I decided to branch out into a new form of artistic expression - mosaics.
The thought processes required for making mosaics are parallel with those needed for painting.
People often compare mosaics to jigsaws, however, it is important to realise that they are very different. For mosaics, such thought processes do not have pre-determined solutions but are expressions with results varying for each piece of work.

Mosaics are the oldest, most durable and functional art form with colours which never fade and comprise materials which withstand sun, rain, frost, or even centuries of interment. As expressed by Carlo Bertelli, ‘mosaic’ art flows through history like a great river through a porous desert, disappearing and reappearing again!

Colours in early mosaics tend to be natural stone, but ,gradually through the centuries, highlights of glass were added. The Byzantines introduced a new tessarae (tile), my personal favourite being Venetian ‘Smalti’ (the Roman word for melt). Merely by angling this fusion of glass onto surfaces, it can create brilliant plays of light, drawing each observer, art enthusiast or not, towards the beauty of this most ancient art form.
