This mosaic panel depicts St. Brigid looking across the beautiful plains of Kildare, the church nestled in the background, holding her staff whilst her great white cloak folds over the rich landscape.
The process of making a mosaic differs with every project. This commission gave me a chance to express my love for the oldest style of mosaic. The design was drawn directly onto the board then every tesserae was cut and shaped, then adhered to the surface with a fully waterproof and weatherproof adhesive before finally being grouted and polished.
This mosaic was installed on December 2nd 2006 with the use of a forklift truck. It is supported with an 8′ long black angle iron bracket and screwed every 8″ around the board. Mastic was then used for extra protection. Mosaics need hardly no maintenance as they are one of the most hardest and durable mediums of art.
