My calligraphy course will introduce the student to the beautiful art of writing, gaining a serious insight to the craft.

Starting with basic layout principles, marking margins, letter spacing, ruling up lines and making strokes, the student will be introduced to five basic alphabets, how to use the pen, design and layout.

Among the styles the student will be introduced to will be the foundational hand miniscule and majusculse, moving on to Italian hand miniscule and majuscule as well. Uncial and gothic will then follow on from here. It is very important that these disciplines should be mastered before moving on to the freer more self-expressive aspects of writing.

Rhythm will come as spacing begins to get more even, spontaneity in the product of complete familiarity with the style being used, good definition between thick and think strokes will occur as one becomes letter acquainted with the tools and clarity in the ease with which a piece can be read.
